The science

Lip skin is thin, has no sebaceous glands and holds very little of the lipid mortar — ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids — that keeps the rest of the skin sealed. That is why lips dry first and why most balms only mask it. Everlume Lip Balm supplies that mortar directly: ceramide NP, cholesterol and phytosphingosine to fill the gaps, encapsulated hyaluronic acid released as the balm melts to bring water in, and pomegranate sterols, squalane and illipe and cocoa butters to slow it leaving. Bisabolol and oat kernel oil keep it calm on lips that react to everything else.

How to use

Glide on as often as lips feel dry, morning and night at minimum. For lips that are cracked or flaking, apply a thicker layer before bed and leave it to work overnight. Keep the cap closed between uses and store it somewhere cool — it is a real butter-and-wax balm and will soften in a hot car.

BARRIER RECOVERY

Ceramide NP is the most abundant ceramide in human skin, built on a phytosphingosine backbone. Here it comes with cholesterol and phytosphingosine — the same three-part lipid mix the barrier is made of, so it fills the gaps rather than covering them.

In 27 healthy adult volunteers whose forearm barrier had been weakened by a topical corticosteroid, a cream containing a ceramide NP–enriched lipid mixture significantly improved barrier recovery, stratum corneum integrity and hydration compared with the vehicle cream, and raised ceramide NP levels in the skin itself. Forearm skin, not lips.

HYALURONIC ACID

Sodium hyaluronate binds many times its weight in water. In an oil-based balm it would normally do nothing, so it is encapsulated in hydrogenated castor oil and released as the balm melts on your lips.

76 women aged 30–60 applied 0.1% hyaluronic acid creams of five different molecular weights around one eye twice daily for 60 days, with a vehicle cream around the other. Every hyaluronic acid cream significantly improved skin hydration and elasticity versus vehicle; the lower-weight versions also reduced measured wrinkle depth. Periocular skin, not lips.

POMEGRANATE STEROLS

Plant sterols pressed from pomegranate seed. A waxy lipid that behaves like lanolin — it integrates into the barrier and slows water loss — without the animal source. It is what gives the balm its cushion without gloss.
