Dry skin usually is not short of oil. It is short of water, and of the small molecules that hold water in place. Clerra is a fine mist built from those molecules: ectoin, glyceryl glucoside, tremella mushroom polysaccharide, sodium PCA and panthenol in a rose water base. Spray it on clean skin and it puts water back where the barrier can keep it, then makes the serum and oil that follow work better. Step 3 of the routine, and a reset any time skin feels tight.

The science

The outer layer of skin holds water with a mix of small molecules called the natural moisturizing factor, and it loses them to washing, weather and age. Clerra replaces them. Sodium PCA is one of the NMF's own components. Glycerin and glyceryl glucoside pull water in, and glyceryl glucoside also raises the aquaporin channels that move it between cells. Tremella polysaccharide forms a light water-holding film on the surface. Ectoin structures water around itself and shields proteins and membranes from stress, and panthenol soothes. No drying alcohol, no added fragrance beyond the rose water base, nothing that evaporates and takes water with it.

How to use

Close your eyes and mist generously over clean skin, morning and night. Do not wait for it to dry — go straight in with Signal Synq while skin is damp, then seal with Everlume or an Ekoa oil. Reapply through the day whenever skin feels tight, over makeup is fine.

ECTOIN

104 WOMEN

A small molecule first found in microbes that survive salt flats and deserts, where it keeps their proteins and membranes working under stress. On skin it structures water around itself, and that ordered water is what makes it a long-lasting moisturizer and a calming ingredient for stressed skin.

In a randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled trial of 104 healthy women, a 2% ectoin emulsion was assessed for moisturizing effect, skin surface structure and elasticity against its vehicle and an untreated control; results favored ectoin with no side effects reported. Separate in-vivo water-loss measurements found the barrier strengthened after an ectoin emulsion.

GLYCERYL GLUCOSIDE

Glycerin joined to a glucose sugar, a molecule desert plants make to survive drying out. In skin it increases aquaporin-3, the channel that moves water and glycerin between cells, so the water you add has somewhere to go.

In 24 women aged 50–70 with dry skin, a 5% glyceryl glucoside formulation significantly reduced water loss through the skin compared with vehicle-treated areas, and in 20 volunteers it raised aquaporin-3 gene expression in the skin. Small vehicle-controlled studies with matching cell-culture work.

TREMELLA POLYSACCHARIDE

A sugar chain from the snow mushroom, Tremella fuciformis. It holds water the way hyaluronic acid does but in a smaller, more flexible molecule, so it lays a light, non-sticky water film across the surface.

In an instrument-tested cosmetic formulation, adding tremella extract lowered water loss through the skin by 12.4% compared with the same formula without it, with adequate epidermal hydration confirmed and no redness or irritation in volunteers at 48 and 72 hours. Formulation study, small panel.
