The science

Your skin's surface holds water with a mix of small molecules called the natural moisturizing factor — sodium PCA, lactate, amino acids. Most cleansers rinse them away with the dirt, which is why skin feels tight. Glouse uses mild plant-derived surfactants, led by decyl glucoside and a coconut-derived hydroxysultaine, to loosen oil, makeup and buildup, and adds those same moisturizing factors back into the wash so the surface keeps its water. Aloe, oat seed extract and lavender water calm, and tara gum leaves a light hydrating film. Clean skin that still feels like skin.

How to use

Massage a small amount onto damp skin for 30 to 60 seconds, working over the face and along the jaw. Add a little water to foam, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Use morning and evening. It takes off light makeup and sunscreen on its own; on heavier makeup, cleanse twice or start with Tetra Oleum.

SODIUM PCA

The sodium salt of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid, one of the main humectants in your skin's own natural moisturizing factor. In Glouse it works with sodium lactate and amino acids to hold water in the surface while the surfactants do their job.

In 36 adults, emulsions with 1% sodium PCA, sodium lactate or lauryl PCA raised forearm hydration by more than 25% over untreated skin and a glycerin placebo within 3 hours, measured by corneometer. Leave-on emulsion, single application.

DECYL GLUCOSIDE

LOWEST IRRITATION

A non-ionic surfactant made from plant sugar and coconut-derived fatty alcohol. It is the mildest of the common foaming cleansers, and the reason Glouse can foam without stripping.

Surfactants used in shower gels and shampoos were patched on normal skin at 5% and compared against water and sodium lauryl sulfate using water-loss, blood-flow and ultrasound measures. Decyl polyglucoside showed the lowest irritant capacity of all surfactants tested, ahead of cocamidopropyl betaine and the ether sulfates. Patch test, not a wash study.

ALOE

2 WEEKS

Organic aloe leaf juice, the second ingredient in the bottle. Its polysaccharides are humectants that sit on the surface and hold water, and it is the calming part of the formula alongside oat seed extract.

Twenty women applied formulations with 0.1%, 0.25% or 0.5% freeze-dried aloe extract to the forearm daily. After a single application the two higher doses raised skin water content versus vehicle; after 2 weeks all three did, measured by corneometer. Leave-on formulation, small study.
